Heroes   Leave a comment

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:1-2, NIV.

Heroes today come in all shapes and sizes, but they are not necessarily what we see on TV or at the movie theatres.  The Bible tells us of many heroes with an impressive listing in Hebrews chapter 11.  These are commonly referred to as “Heroes of the Faith.”  What I find fascinating is how each of these are known as heroes for differing reasons.

Abel was a hero because he made the right kind of sacrifice to the Lord.

Noah was a hero because he showed obedience even in the face of a ridiculing world.

Abraham was a hero for many reasons, but primarily because he trusted God completely.

Moses was a hero because he chose to follow God completely and publicly in spite of his opportunity to remain considered a high-ranking Egyptian.

God’s people were heroes when they crossed the Red Sea and walked in circles for the walls of Jericho to come crashing down.

Rahab was a hero because she realized that she was on the wrong side and decided to help God’s people.

We need more heroes today.  The reasons listed above are truly all that God is looking for in us.  We may never conquer an enemy or flatten a city, but we can certainly be the example that God is calling us to be.  The Lord needs more people of faith to be faithful completely.  Put your trust and devotion completely in Him, and you too will be the hero God has designed you to be.

Put this to practice in your life.  I say this for a very important reason.  Hebrews 11:13a is a critical statement that all people of God should strive to achieve.

“All these people were still living by faith when they died.”

You have an opportunity today to recommit your life to living out the legacy God desires for your life.  Be what He wants you to be, and you’ll be a hero in the eyes of the Lord.
