I’m FULL   Leave a comment

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”  (John 10:10, NIV)

Actually, I like the New Living Translation a bit better when it says, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.  My purpose is to give life in all its fullness.”

Jesus had a purpose.  His primary purpose was to make sure that we had an opportunity to receive everything that He had to offer.  What was the offer?  Life!  But not just any life.  Abundant life.  Life that is full.  Life that is full of all the goodness that God has to offer.  He wants us to have it all!

I recently heard a motivational speaker (at 21-C) talking about how God wants you to become “the best possible version of yourself.”  Knowing how the Lord wants you to have everything He can give you, it is important to understand that this does require a bit of effort on your part.  How can you become the best possible version of yourself?

First of all, learn the basics.  God loves you.  He loves you so much that He sent His Son, Jesus to become a sacrifice for your sins and mine.  The penalty for our sins has been paid in full.  We are required to simply believe in Him in our hearts, confess with our mouths, and we will have a secure home in heaven for all eternity (Romans 10:9-11).  But that is just the beginning.

Jesus told the disciples that there would come a “Comforter”, God’s very own Spirit to be with us, dwell within us, teach us and guide us as we continue to strive to live for Him.  He wants to give us everything that we could possibly ask for in His name.  Mind you, this is not some kind of divine shopping experience.  “Dear God, I want that new car in Jesus’ name, that house in Jesus’ name, etc., etc., etc., Amen.”  This is simply allowing God to fully exist in you so that you can become the best possible version of yourself.

If you owned a $100,000 sports car, you wouldn’t paint it with a cheap brush.  You would treat that vehicle as if your life depended upon it!  It would only have the finest of fuels, delicate soaps & waxes, and the greatest of maintenance that a car could ever desire.

How are you treating your body?  Oops!  I recently spoke a bit about fasting, and I kept referring to my own sizeable belly.  I was preaching to myself!  “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore, honor God with your body” (1 Cor. 6:19-20, NIV).

One area of life that hinders us from being the best possible versions of ourselves is our own self-abuse.  Not everyone takes care of themselves like they should.  The author of this Pep Talk must stand first in that line!

God wants us to have His best.  That means physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  He wants us to be so in tune to His presence within us that we can’t help but desire to do everything possible to please Him and experience His fullness.  It’s time to get FULL!

I write this as I’m preparing to go to town to take care of some business and have a bite to eat.  I think that I’ll try making some better decisions now.  Maybe I’ll have the chicken instead of the burger.  Perhaps the turkey.  How about that salad?  Water instead of soda?  Why not?
