Losing Weight   Leave a comment

Yes, I’m a bit overweight.  That is, if you consider 40 pounds to be a bit!  I have no doubts that the next time I see my doctor, he’ll look me squarely in the face and say something like, “Let’s do something about these extra pounds.”

As if he is actually planning on helping!  I know what I need.  It’s the standard “diet and exercise” answer.  These will either help my body return to proper health or they kill me.  In my present physical condition, I can’t say that I’m feeling great about either.  Proper health is my goal; it’s the actual losing of the weight that I fear.  It will take a lot of work to get rid of that which I need to lose.

Baggage we carry in our spirits can weigh us down and keep us from receiving God’s tremendous gifts.  Maybe that’s why the writer of Hebrews wrote, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scoring its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:1-3, NIV)

How is your spiritual life?  Are you a finely tuned Christian machine?  Is your spiritual ‘body fat’ at an all-time low?  Or are there some issues, some sins perhaps, that are weighing you down in your walk with the Lord?

Here’s a thought; lose some weight!  None of us can run the race God has set out for us with perseverance if we continue to carry the baggage that separates us from Him.  Confess those sins, get rid of those nasty habits, get back on the treadmill of spiritual ‘diet and exercise’, and you’ll find that the joy of the Lord will be yours in a whole new way.  Your step will have more bounce, your shoulders lifted, because you will be lighter.

C’mon, let’s lose some weight together!
