The Adventure Begins – Sermon Summary   1 comment

Begin series Real Followers.  Romans 10:9-10.

In order to be a real follower of Jesus Christ, one must have a starting point.  It begins in your heart, but it doesn’t stop there.

I am so glad that the Great Commission is so very clear.  It does not say to go make church members, or Baptists, committee members or good givers.  It says to go and make “disciples.”  Why do so many Christians make discipleship out to be such a difficult thing?  Why do others make it out to merely being a Christian?  What is a disciple?

In Jesus’ time, a Talmud was a student of a rabbi.  There were levels of education for young boys and the best continued to advance.  By the time a lad was eligible to follow a rabbi, only the best of the best remained.  The other students that didn’t fare so well returned to follow their family trade.  It was a weeding process that would result in the student applying to follow a rabbi who would then choose his students.

Jesus chose his disciples; young men who were out working.  This would mean that they must not have been among the best of the best.

All who follow Jesus are called disciples.  The word means “learner,” although there is a Greek word used frequently that indicates “to walk behind, to follow.”  One of the sayings of the day for Talmudim was “May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi.”  The closer you were, the more of what he stepped on or in got on you.  This was a good sign because you really were that close.

Being a disciple today means a radical way of life – One that goes against the world’s wisdom, knowledge and teachings, and follows God’s leadership, His morals and His teachings.  We should be following the Lord like a puppy follows a treat.

It all starts in the heart.  This is where belief begins, but then there must be an understanding that Jesus is the only one worthy of believing in.  He said that He is the only way to God the Father and I believe it.  Our passage also shows that we must make our belief known.  Jesus said that if we are ashamed of Him then He will be ashamed of us before His Father.

That is scary enough for me to make sure that my beliefs are known.

Believe in your heart.  Confess with your mouth.  Start this great adventure of being a disciple of the Lord.
