A Servant’s Attitude – Sermon Summary   1 comment

Mark 10:42-45.  Real Followers series, pt.7 (conclusion).

James and John asked the wrong question.  The other 10 had the wrong reaction.  Jesus made it right.

James and John had approached Jesus prior to today’s text and asked if they could be seated on either side of Jesus in His kingdom.  There are no higher seats one could ask to fill.  The other 10 became “indignant” with them.  This could be motivated in one of three ways: either they were jealous that they didn’t think of it first, they felt that they also were deserving of those seats, or that nobody had the right to ask such a question.  Personally, I think it was a combination of the first two although the third is what we all hope they meant.  Somehow, the word “indignant” makes me stick with my original conclusion.

Jesus made many “I have come” type statements as recorded in the Gospels.  He came…

  • not to abolish the law but to fulfill it
  • not to bring peace but a sword
  • to set a man against his father
  • to bring fire to the earth
  • to seek and save the lost
  • in His Father’s name, “and you do not accept me”

His statement here is beautiful.  “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  (Mark 10:45, NIV).

The word translated here “to serve”  is the same Greek word from which we get our word “Deacon.”  The type of service is not clarified and that is because Jesus performed many different kinds of service.

Basically, Jesus is saying this, “I have come to give my all for you.”

Real Followers are those who willingly give their all for Him!

This is a lesson and humility and activity.  It is a servant’s attitude.  Since servants serve, how can we serve today?

  1. You serve God in your devotion and commitment to Him.
  2. You serve the body of Christ by using your God-given spiritual gifts and talents (1 Corinthians 12:1-27-yes, I read it all).
  3. You serve the Lord’s work also by supporting His church.

[Soapbox moment for #3]  All churches have one problem – money.  They either have it or don’t.  Those that have it are usually accused of hoarding it and also have the problem of people not being proper stewards and tithers.  Those that don’t have it fall short in ministry goal-setting and focus more on what they don’t have instead of God’s plans.

Jesus came so that we can have a personal relationship with the Lord.  Once we find this “life to the full” it inspires us to be Real Followers.

Real followers believe in Jesus, grow closer to Him every day, study and meditate upon His word, have personal conversations with Him constantly, are faithful to be part of His family in the church, are bold witnesses for the Lord, and serve the Lord and others with all their hearts.
