Never Without Friends – Always Say Never pt. 5   1 comment

Romans 12:4-8.

We will soon get to the subject of spiritual gifts and how to discern yours and such other topics that this text can also address.  But sometimes you just read a passage and a certain phrase just jumps off the page at you, commanding your attention.  As I was reading this, I had one of those phrases hit me; “…each member belongs to all the others.”What we have here is a message from the church to the church about the church.  In the body of Christ, not only can we understand that we’re never alone, never afraid, never ashamed because we’re never the same, but that we are also never without friends in our walk.

Leaving our church home for ministry was very difficult.  A very good friend of Diane’s sang Michael W. Smith’s “Friends are Friends Forever”.  While I was fighting back emotions while she sang, I glanced over to Diane only to find what appeared to be a small tropical rain system emerging from her face.

Christians, please be careful with your motivations for establishing friendship.  I am a firm believer that friendship evangelism is one of if not the most effective way to help people become Christians.  But I am not in favor of establishing friendships with evangelism in mind that places restrictions or limits upon the friendship dependent upon their response to the Gospel.  What if they reject?  For some that means the end of the friendship.  For those people, I think you’re doing a disservice to the unconditional love of God that we are supposed to be emulating as His followers.

If you have not yet read “Jim and Casper Go to Church” – get it and read it, twice at least.

On the other hand, the church is actually a great place to meet new friends.  Look at the relationship within the body of faith between Jonathan and David.  The church is where I found my wife of 18 years.

But understand the importance of church also.  What does it mean to ‘belong to others’?  The church is where we worship, pray, work on mission, grow as disciples, dream and communicate together.  We are to celebrate our diversity as individuals that make up the whole.  The writer of Hebrews emphasized that we should never neglect meeting together.

None of this would be possible without the Ultimate Friend.  Jesus said that there is no greater love than one that lays down his life for his friends – precisely what Jesus did for you and me.
